I Got Me A Job

Yep, I’m working in a foundry, and let me tell you, it’s beating the shit out of my body. Part of the reason I haven’t been blogging much, is that I can barely move my limbs when I get home. Other than that, it seems like a pretty sweet gig. We get most Fridays off, and it’s a ten minute walk from the house.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t walk to work, but I’m going to when the girls are done school. I get done about 15 minutes before the bus drops them off at their stop, so I pick them up and take them home. I have to drive to pick them up anyhow, but when summer hits I’ll either be walking or riding a bike to work each day. I’m really looking forward to that, because I need to get myself in some sort of shape, and walking is a pretty easy way for a lazy guy. It’s painfully obvious that I need conditioning, as I have to stretch my back and neck every twenty minutes to alleviate the burning ache from standing in one spot and looking down for extended periods. I know it will get better as my body gets used to the shitty posture, and hopefully I’ll be doing different jobs around the place, after I learn the grinding part. That was what I was hired for, a sort of do everything kind of guy.

I was pretty impressed with the amount of work that has to go into getting a finished product from a pot of molten aluminium. Making molds, casting, grinding, and polishing are just a few of the steps, so suffice it to say that I have plenty to learn, and if you know me at all, you know that I love to gain knowledge of pretty well everything.

One thing I did learn is that you can’t throw wet or cold metal into the pot or else you’re going to blow shit up. The guys were telling me about a few occurrences where guys threw a wet ladle into the molten metal and were burnt up pretty bad as well as setting all kinds of shit on fire when the liquid exploded. It sounds bad enough that I don’t want to see it happen, even just to satisfy my curiosity. Hey, maybe there is a Youtube video on the subject.

Yep, I found a small scale one so you, and I, can see what happens.

Eep! I think I’ll stay away from the booze when I have to work the next day. That shit is not cool at all. Anyhow, I’m going to hit the hay and grab some Z’s so I can be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed tomorrow. 5:45 am comes earlier than I’m used to.

And we’re waiting here in Allentown, but they’ve taken all the coal from the ground,

P.S. The post on March 1st was the Guardian Bell giveaway, but the only two comments aren’t eligible, so the first person to go and comment on it will win the March prize.

  1. Way to go on the job! Sounds like it might be kinda interesting to learn. Will you get to learn how to make the molds? What are the molds for?

    • Thanks, and I’d like to, but I’m probably not an optimal candidate for training for that job. I think that it takes quite a while to learn, and it’s not like I have a lot of working years left. You never know though.
