Hey, Thanks A Bunch

(This is an almost exact replica of the post I put on Granola Light, but because some of the action comes from here, I thought it only fair to post one on Change The Topic too.)

I got a wonderful email today from Amazon.ca telling me that they had deposited a payment into our account. Wahoo!

As we’ve mentioned before, if you go through any Amazon link on this site and buy anything from Amazon within 24 hours of clicking through, we get a referral fee from Amazon.

You can learn more HERE.

Well, some of you have done this, and we just wanted to thank you for that.

It’s not going to make us rich or anything(unless we can get some of the sheep shagging crowd) , but if the monthly amounts keep going the way they have been, the money earned will be enough to pay the web hosting fees for the year.

That’s a nice savings, and it is appreciated. The way we look at it is that every little bit helps, and we don’t want to take anything for granted. I just wanted you to know that it means a lot to us, and the money is actually going somewhere that is really helping out.

So thank you. Thanks for clicking and putting a bit of dough back in our wallets, but most of all thanks for stopping by. We really love hearing from you, and because we are horrible at keeping in contact with our friends, this is generally the only way we do it.

Hopefully that doesn’t make us bad people, we just get caught up in life, and time gets away from us. It’s not that we don’t want to talk to anyone.

You understand, right Mom?

Anyhow, the soap, mealworms and the composting worms are doing fantastic, and the chickens are good too, but Red keeps laying eggs while roosting. I went out at about 5 AM and put her in a nesting box, and when I opened the coop at 7, she had a beautiful little egg that wasn’t smashed on the floor, so I will keep doing that until she learns, I guess.

We are also looking into black soldier fly larva, sprouting grains, and aquaponics for the future, so that’s pretty exciting. For me. I’m a real nerd when it comes to this stuff.

Is Everybody Fucked?

wpid-mindofbirdman.jpg

You can take that question in a few different directions.

I look at the American elections, cringe, and ask myself if everybody is fucked in the head.

On one hand, you have a lying, orange, narcissist who absolutely cannot be trusted with the future of the country, but possibly will be, because of the other hand.

Over there sits a corrupt, lying, deceiver who also cannot be trusted with the future of the country.

I wish you had a third hand, America. You could put Jill Stein in it. I think Bernie Sanders would have been better, but he sold out and backed his party’s shitheel candidate. I think that Jill Stein is a better choice than either of the other two, but we all know that she hasn’t got a hope in hell of becoming the Chief Cook and Bottle Washer of that once great, and hopefully great once again, nation.

She just doesn’t have the backing of big business, or really anybody, other than some regular people who are fed up with all of the shit going on down there.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not just the States that are dealing with this shit, it’s just that they are in the limelight at the moment. We have our own highly corrupt bunch of talking suits here, as does almost every other “civilised” country on this once great planet, but right now, this buffonery is taking centre stage.

I really hope that something happens with the collective consciousness down there, and that somehow you can turn this shitshow around, because as your most Anglicized neighbours, we really want to be able to look to you for hope.

Hope to destroy the TPP, race wars, religious control of politicians, and all other forms of greed and corruption at all levels of government.

We would also like to see what freedom looks like again. We hope you can show us.

Which brings up another possible interpretation of the question:

Are we all fucked now? Is there any hope that the world will ever know peace? Is there a chance that we will ever be able to rid ourselves of the holier than thou image that most religions put in our heads?

I’m better than you, because my Bible tells me that I’m going to heaven. (Unless my god really can see inside my head, or what I did in Vegas last year.) All Muslims are filthy terrorists. Jews are trying to take over the world’s finances, and don’t even get me started on the gays. Why can’t they just go live on an island or stay in their closets? They’re an abomination in the eyes of the Lord.

To get the Muslim point of view, replace Bible with Quran, Muslims with Christians, terrorists with infidels, and the Lord with Allah.

You get the point.

Anyhow, I’m going to just keep building the chicken coop, tending to the worm farms and gardens, cuddling in with my baby at night, and hoping we wake up on Lasqueti Island.

It’s harder for The Man to find you there.

Peace

What’s Been Happening

birdmandesk

Well, let me tell you.

We did our second farmer’s market in Hudson’s Hope and it went very well, despite not having any way to get out of the hot sun. Some of the soap and my mind got a bit soft, but other than that it was a win. Looking forward to spending the money we made on a sun/rain shelter. Does anyone have any suggestions for one that’s at least 100 ft², relatively inexpensive, and easy to set up with one person? Throw a comment up if you do.

I wrote a post at Granola Light, and it was about my new mealworm farm. Since then, I have birthed one crippled beetle and probably 30 more pupae. I figured I had better get some larvae in the fridge, because I think 200+ beetles might overwhelm me in a short time. I think each beetle lays between 350 and 500 eggs, so the bins will be getting pretty full in a year. I’m hoping to sell them to local people, but in a town of about 1000, I think it would be a bit of overkill.

Unless I can find some of the protein crazy folks that eat the creepy little bastards in their smoothies. If I can get that fad going here, I will be in business.

I have also been hardcore working on the Dirty Bird Soap Empire website, whenever I get time. If you get a chance, check it out and let me know if I’m on the right track. We have an online store there, but there is no way to pay, so you can just look for now. I’m not sure how well online sales will go, but we are thinking of opening it up in the next few weeks to see how it all shakes out. Apparently this WooCommerce plugin is pretty simple to use, so I guess we will find out soon enough.

These are some of our beauties.

These are some of our beauties.

We also have a new FB page for the soap company, if you are so inclined. I don’t blame you if you aren’t. I just use it for the various pages and the local buy and sell. I unfollow everyone, because I find it distracting when there are people in my news feed, and all I want to do is sell/buy something or share a post on one of the pages. It’s nothing personal, but as most of you know, I swore off FB many moons ago, so at least I am acknowledging the problem. Unfortunately, I am a marketing whore and we all know that everyone is on there. If I thought I could sell something on G+, I would, but that’s not what it’s good for.

We have a bunch of new batches we are trying out, so if you are out and about in HH on Tuesday, stop by the farmer’s market and have a sniff. There are all kinds of great vendors there, and I will be selling some nightcrawlers as well. Soon we are hoping to get a local potter to make some fancy ass soap dishes for us to sell as well. If not, I guess we will have to branch out further in the province, because we need nice soap dishes too.

These actually look pretty simple to make. With the right wood and some tools.

My job is going really well, and I’m hoping I can get on steady one of these days. It is really the best job I’ve had in a very long time(ever), and for this period in my life, I don’t know how it could get better.(LottoMax)

Anyhow, I hope you freaks are enjoying your spring. We sure are. Take good care of yourselves.

I’m Learning Stuff. Reluctantly

fromthemindofbirdman1

So I have been working on a new blog that will talk about our ongoing lifestyle change. It’s going to be about the little things we are doing to get ready for when we can get an acreage and start the off-grid life we have been planning. It will also talk a lot about where we are coming from and the challenges people face when trying to change decades of programming by a rather uncaring society.

This has brought me to a sad conclusion.

I am not as computer literate as I had previously imagined myself.

I’m not saying that I dreamed myself into a life where I could hack corporate websites to give all the profits to the employees or anything, but I figured I had enough knowledge to be able to follow phone directions on what to search for to solve my problem.

I don’t.

It’s possible that it has more to do with my listening and memory skills than my programming ability, but even after all was said and done, I was on the WordPress forums with an improperly worded question that was probably stared at by a dozen people with blank looks on their faces.

Needless to say, I screwed up when I started Change The Topic. I was spending so much time with it, that I never dreamed of having more than one site, so it was never set up properly to accommodate multiple websites. Now I’m trying to do that, and it’s giving me grief.

I called GoDaddy to see what the problem was, and they found it, but it’s outside of their scope of business. I think they have people who do code and programming and all of that, but it isn’t included in the hosting fees, so being poor and also having nothing to do, I opted for learning it on my own. Brian was quite helpful though, as he did a search and found all kinds of help on the subject. He then told me what to search for and I typed it in before I got off the phone with him, so I would remember.

I should say that I partially typed it in.

As I was typing, a text came in from a friend who was bringing my new batch of worms up from Chilliwack, and I suppose that in the excitement, I didn’t finish the Google search.

Fuck you, self diagnosed ADD.

“installing wordpress into a su” was all that was there when I came back to the computer after getting the worms nestled away into their new bedding.

For the life of me I can’t remember what the rest of the search was, so now I’m waiting for someone to respond to my makeshift forum question.

And playing with my worms.

Re-Publish Old Posts?

birdmandesk

I was just going through my posts, starting with the first and working my way up, to fix any errors, dead links, dead photos, or whatever I see fit. I was also putting ads in, because I’m poor. I mean really, why not? People buy shit from Amazon all the time. If they click on a link on this site, Amazon sends me a small chunk, and it doesn’t cost anyone anything extra.

Anyhow, I started reading these old posts and getting all nostalgic, when I came across one that ruffled some feathers. I had forgotten about this post, but when I read it again, I wanted to republish it. It’s one of those ones that I wouldn’t dare add any photos to. It’s not funny, and any photos would either diminish it, or rip a hole through my soul, for lack of a better word.

I started looking into republishing old posts, you know, to recycle content that some people might not see, or to post something to fill in the gaps. I just don’t know if it’s a good idea or not.

If I go through with it, what would be an acceptable amount of regurgitation? Once a week? I don’t want to make people hate me my self promoting doppelganger. Fucking attention whore.

I also applied for a job with the Canadian Census 2016 today. It seems like it would be alright, judging from the little flyer they put in the mail. It’s from early March to the end of July, so that’s pretty reasonable weather for banging on doors or whatever the job entails.

I’m also going to be selling some of my composting worms for bait. This is good, because that will help recoup some of the cost of getting them, and setting them up. I also hope to be able to build some flow through bins and sell some composting packages to locals as my red wiggler population grows. I really love these worms. They are so cool and hungry. I’d say they have tripled in population since I got them around August. They could be a blog on their own, really. A boring blog that nobody would read, but a blog nonetheless.

Anyhow, I guess I need to know if one old post a week would bother anyone, and if anyone has ever worked for the census and what it was like. Let me know in the comments or by whatever means you have available that would tickle your fancy.
